Evening Walk

The night air held a heavy, earthy smell tonight as I walked back home from my mom's house. Crickets, small frogs and all manner of small beasties sang loudly from the woods. My mind wandered to the many deep southern nights I have known and loved. A moist, warm summer air during the late evening walk home stirred a longing in me and a love for who I am as a woman of the south, living on the coast at the edge of a small city (and that is being generous). Eight miles from the beach often allows for a faint smell of ocean air to blend into the evening smells. Tonight I allowed myself to let go and remember my childhood evenings when air conditioning was not an option and the air stood as still as still could be as we prayed for a breeze.
It's late. I'm going to bed.
